M – 8/27 – Introduction – HW –  Get course materials. Read Ch.1 about Point and Support, pp. 3-7.

 

W – 8/29 – Writing Sample – Baseline paragraph written in class. – HW- Keep all work in your comp book, and label and date assignments clearly. Read and do Activities on pp. 9-19.

M – 9/3 – LABOR DAY HOLIDAY – NO CLASS

 

W – 9/5– Review Ch. 1 in class – Discuss The Writing Process – Brainstorming activity in class (pp. 20-27).  HW – Pick your favorite brainstorming technique and do one at home in your comp book on the topic assigned in class.

M – 9/10 – Review and continue in Ch. 2 in class, pp. 28-31 – In groups, do Activities on pp. 32 and 34 and on pp. 35-40 independently in your comp book. Discuss Paragraphs, pp. 44-48, and then in groups, do Activities 1 & 2 on pp. 46-48.  HW – Read/Do Ch.3, pp. 49-55, filling in blanks along the way (or in comp book.)

 

W – 9/12 – Discuss Reinforcing Point and Support in class, pp. 55-58. – Groups, pp. 58-62. Read pp. 62-85. Post a quick reading log entry in your comp book. Review/discuss “adequate details” in class – HW – Assignment 1,2, or 3 on pp. 85-87. Write draft in comp book.

M – 9/17 – Show draft of homework for points. Discuss Ch. 4 together in class – Organization, Transitions. Do Activity on pp. 95-97 in class. HW – Revise paragraph assignment using added material from class discussion. Strive to make your sentences flow smoothly and clearly. Type a revision of your paragraph.

 

W – 9/19 In-class Writing 1 (ICW 1) – HW – Read/Skim Ch. 5 & 6. Post a reading log entry in your comp book. In other words, write a paragraph or two about any of the topics within those chapters that stand out to you as particularly helpful or noteworthy.

M – 9/24 – Go over end of Ch. 4. Discuss highlights of Ch. 5 & 6 in class.  HW – Edit paragraphs, striving to make your sentences error-free. Get typed paragraph ready to be turned in.

 

 

W – 9/26 – Turn in Take-home Paragraph. Review Ch. 5 & 6 in class – Quiz – Begin Introduction to Paragraph Development, Ch. 7, pp. 175-178. Do Activity on p. 178 in groups.  HW – Read pp. 179-184. Post a reading log entry in your comp book. What points are made in these pages that seem as if they may be good suggestions for you during your writing process?

M – 10/22 – Discuss/Review Ch. 10 – Activity in class.  HW – Read Ch. 18 – Writing the Essay, pp. 311-318. Post a reading log entry in your comp book. In what ways are the structure of essays like the structure of paragraphs? Then continue reading pp. 318-331. Draw a line and then continue your reading log entry. How will the points made in this chapter help you? What do you think are the most important ideas covered?

 

W – 10/24ICW 3 (Illustration), part one –  HW – Read “Rudeness at the Movies” by Bill Wine on pp. 706. Post a reading log entry in your comp book. Do you think the point the author makes is done effectively? Why or why not?

M –10/29 ICW 3 (Illustration), part two  HW – Read “The Most Hateful Words” by Amy Tan on p. 693. Post a reading log entry in your comp book. What do you think the author’s overall point is? How do you like her writing style? Try to explain your opinion.

 

W– 10/31 – Quiz/Discussion of previous two homework readings. HW – Review main ideas in Ch. 18. HW- Review material discussed in class. Re-read the two essays and think about examples of your own that relate to the points that the authors seem to be making.

W– 11/7 ICW 4 (Argument), part two HW – Read “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” by Anita Garland on p. 668. Post a reading log entry in your comp book. Are you convinced by the author? How does the way the author writes  help to convince you or not? AND Read “The Scholarship Jacket” by Marta Salinas on p. 606. Post another reading log entry in your comp book. What is the author’s argument? How effective is the essay? Explain.
